HPV Screening PCR Test in Kathmandu

About this test
This molecular test uses PCR to look directly for the genetic material (DNA) of the human papillomavirus in cells collected from the cervix, rather than waiting for the virus to cause visible changes. It specifically detects the high-risk strains โ most importantly types 16 and 18, which together cause the majority of cervical cancers, alongside a panel of other oncogenic types such as 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. Because the test finds the virus itself, it picks up risk earlier and more reliably than a conventional Pap smear, and a negative result is reassuring enough that screening can usually be safely spaced several years apart. A doctor orders it for routine cervical screening in women, typically from around age 30, to follow up an abnormal or unclear Pap result, or to monitor a woman after treatment for pre-cancerous lesions. Most women have no symptoms at all, which is exactly why screening matters; occasionally it is requested when there is unexplained bleeding between periods, bleeding after intercourse, or an abnormal discharge. The result is interpreted together with cytology (the Pap smear) in what is called co-testing, and a positive high-risk result often leads to colposcopy for a closer look. Cervical cancer remains one of the commonest cancers among Nepali women and is largely preventable, yet organised screening coverage is still low, so this test โ together with HPV vaccination in younger girls โ is a powerful tool for catching trouble long before it becomes dangerous.
Sample type
Cervical swab (liquid-based cytology vial)
Preparation
No fasting needed. Schedule the test when you are not bleeding โ ideally a few days after your period ends. For 48 hours before the sample is collected, avoid vaginal douching, creams, pessaries, spermicides, and intercourse, as these can interfere with the result. Tell us if you are pregnant.
