Parasite Identification Test in Kathmandu
Next Day turnaround at Peoples Diagnostics Laboratory & Clinic, Sanobharang. Walk in 7AMโ8PM, or pre-book via WhatsApp.
About this test
Parasite Identification is a microscopic examination in which a trained technologist examines a stool sample under the microscope to look for intestinal parasites and the eggs (ova), cysts, larvae, and trophozoites they shed. It can detect protozoa such as Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica (the cause of amoebic dysentery), and helminths (worms) including roundworm (Ascaris), hookworm, whipworm, pinworm, and tapeworm. A doctor typically orders it when someone has prolonged or recurrent diarrhoea, loose stools mixed with blood or mucus, crampy abdominal pain, bloating, weight loss, an itchy bottom at night (a classic pinworm clue in children), or unexplained eosinophilia on a blood count. In Kathmandu and across Nepal, where waterborne and food-borne infection is common, parasitic gut infection remains a leading reason for chronic loose motions, childhood malnutrition, and iron-deficiency anaemia from hookworm, so this test is one of the most useful first-line investigations for persistent digestive symptoms. Because many parasites are shed intermittently, a single negative result does not fully rule out infection, and your doctor may request two or three samples collected on separate days for greater reliability. The findings are usually interpreted alongside your symptoms, travel and water-source history, and a complete blood count, and they directly guide the choice of treatment, since the medicine for an amoeba differs from that for a worm. A positive result lets your doctor treat the exact organism rather than guessing.
Sample type
Stool (fresh)
Preparation
No fasting required. Bring a fresh stool sample in the clean container we provide, collected within two hours of passing it, and avoid contaminating it with urine or toilet water. Do not start anti-parasite medicine, antacids, oily laxatives, or antibiotics in the days before collection, as these reduce the chance of finding the organism. If your doctor has asked for repeat samples, collect them on different days.
Turnaround time
Reports for Parasite Identification are typically ready within: Next Day. Reports can be collected at the clinic during opening hours or shared via WhatsApp once they are ready.
