Rota Virus Stool Test in Kathmandu
3rd Working Day turnaround at Peoples Diagnostics Laboratory & Clinic, Sanobharang. Walk in 7AMโ8PM, or pre-book via WhatsApp.
About this test
This test looks for rotavirus directly in a stool sample, usually by detecting its antigen with a rapid immunoassay. Rotavirus is the single most common cause of severe, dehydrating diarrhoea in infants and young children worldwide, and it remains a major reason for paediatric hospital admissions in Nepal โ particularly during the cooler, drier winter months when transmission peaks. A doctor will typically order it when a child under five develops the classic pattern of sudden watery diarrhoea, vomiting, low-grade fever and signs of dehydration, especially if several children in a household or daycare fall ill together. Confirming rotavirus matters for two practical reasons: it reassures the family that antibiotics are unnecessary (the illness is viral and self-limiting), and it directs attention to the real priority โ adequate oral rehydration with ORS, zinc supplementation, and careful monitoring of fluid loss. A positive result identifies the cause; a negative result helps the clinician consider other agents such as bacterial pathogens, Giardia, or other viruses like norovirus, which is why it is often interpreted alongside a routine stool examination and, where indicated, a stool culture. The test does not gauge severity, so management always rests on the child's hydration status rather than the laboratory finding alone. It is also useful for infection-control decisions in wards and households, as rotavirus spreads easily by the faecal-oral route. With Nepal's rotavirus vaccine now part of the national immunisation schedule, this test additionally helps track breakthrough infections and the changing burden of childhood diarrhoeal disease.
Sample type
Stool (fresh)
Preparation
No fasting or special diet needed. Collect a fresh stool sample in the clean, leak-proof container we provide and bring it to the lab as soon as possible โ ideally within a couple of hours. If there is a delay, keep it refrigerated, not frozen. A sample taken during the acute, watery phase of the illness gives the most reliable result. Do not collect stool from a nappy that has soaked into cotton or tissue.
