About this test

A Stool Routine Examination has three components: a physical inspection (colour, consistency, presence of mucus or visible blood), a chemical test (occult blood, reducing substances, pH), and a microscopic look for red and white blood cells, fat globules, undigested food, parasite eggs, cysts, and ova. It is the first-line workup for any patient with diarrhoea, dysentery, blood in stool, recurrent abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss — and a key screening test in children with poor growth or vague tummy aches. The microscopy can confirm common Nepali parasitic infections such as giardiasis, amoebiasis, and roundworm, often allowing same-day initiation of treatment. If the routine examination suggests a bacterial cause, a Stool Culture & Sensitivity is the natural follow-up to identify the organism and the right antibiotic.

Preparation

Provide a fresh sample; older specimens degrade and reduce accuracy. Avoid contamination with urine or toilet water. Stop anti-parasitic medication, laxatives, and antacids for at least 48 hours unless your doctor has told you otherwise.
