Anti-Mullerian Hormone is produced by the small developing follicles inside the ovaries, so its level in the blood acts as a count of the egg supply a woman still has in reserve. Because that supply falls steadily with age, AMH is the most useful single marker of ovarian reserve and gives a far steadier picture than older cycle-day hormone tests — it barely changes through the month, which is why it can be drawn on any day. Fertility specialists request it most often when a couple has been trying to conceive without success, before starting IVF or other assisted-reproduction cycles to predict how the ovaries will respond to stimulation, and when a woman wants to understand her reproductive timeline before planning a family. A high level is a hallmark of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which is common among younger women in Kathmandu presenting with irregular periods, acne or unwanted hair, while a low level suggests a diminished reserve or an approaching menopause. It also helps monitor recovery after ovarian surgery or chemotherapy. The result is never read alone: doctors interpret it together with the woman's age, an antral follicle count on ultrasound, and hormones such as FSH and oestradiol. In men and children, AMH is occasionally measured to assess testicular tissue or to investigate ambiguous genitalia. Importantly, AMH reflects egg quantity, not egg quality, so a reassuring number does not guarantee pregnancy and a low one does not rule it out — your gynaecologist will place it in the wider clinical context.
