About this test

Albumin is the single most abundant protein in your blood, made entirely by the liver, and this test measures how much of it is circulating in your serum. Because the liver manufactures it and the kidneys are meant to keep it from leaking out, albumin acts as a quiet status report on both organs at once. It also does real work: it holds fluid inside your blood vessels (which is why a low level can lead to swelling of the ankles, abdomen, or face), and it ferries hormones, calcium, bilirubin, and many medicines around the body. Doctors most often order it as part of a liver function panel or a total protein/albumin-globulin (A:G) study, and a persistently low albumin may point to chronic liver disease, the protein loss of nephrotic-syndrome kidney disease, poor nutrition, or a long-standing inflammatory or malignant illness. In Kathmandu it is frequently checked alongside investigations for chronic hepatitis B and C, for tuberculosis and other chronic infections that waste body protein, and in patients with unexplained oedema or ascites.
