About this test

Beta-HCG measures the precise level of human chorionic gonadotropin in the blood — the hormone produced by the placenta after implantation. Unlike a urine pregnancy test, the blood Beta-HCG can detect pregnancy as early as 8–10 days after conception, well before a missed period, and gives a quantitative number that lets the doctor track how the pregnancy is progressing. In a normal early pregnancy, Beta-HCG roughly doubles every 48–72 hours. The test is used to confirm pregnancy when the urine test is borderline, to monitor very early pregnancies for viability, to follow up suspected ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, and to plan IVF timing. Beta-HCG is also used as a tumour marker in trophoblastic disease and certain rare testicular and ovarian cancers, so an unexpectedly high value in a non-pregnant patient may prompt further investigation.
