About this test

CA 15-3 measures a protein shed into the bloodstream by breast tissue, derived from the MUC-1 gene, and its main value lies in following a known breast cancer rather than finding a new one. It is not a screening test: levels are often normal in early, localised disease and can rise in healthy people or in benign conditions such as breast inflammation, liver disease, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it is never used to diagnose cancer on its own. Where it earns its place is in monitoring. Once a patient has been diagnosed with breast cancer, oncologists use serial CA 15-3 measurements to judge how well chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, or other treatment is working, and to give early warning of recurrence or spread to bone, liver, or other sites — a falling figure is reassuring, a steadily rising one prompts further imaging. Because a single reading means little, the trend over weeks and months matters far more than any one number, which is why we ask for previous reports. It is interpreted alongside the clinical examination, mammography or ultrasound, CT or bone scans, and sometimes the related marker CEA.
