About this test

An electrocardiogram records the electrical activity that drives each heartbeat, picked up through ten small adhesive electrodes placed on the chest and limbs and displayed as the familiar twelve-lead tracing. It is painless, takes only a few minutes, and involves no needles, radiation, or injected dye. From this short recording a doctor can read the heart's rate and rhythm, detect abnormal beats such as atrial fibrillation or ectopics, and see patterns that point to a current or past heart attack, a thickened or strained heart muscle, conduction blocks, and the effects of disturbed potassium or calcium levels. An ECG is the first test ordered when someone reports chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness on exertion, dizziness, or fainting, and it is routinely done before surgery, during a general health check after the age of forty, and to monitor people already taking heart or blood-pressure medication. In Nepal it carries added value as a baseline and follow-up tool for the large number of adults living with rheumatic heart disease, undiagnosed hypertension, and chronic lung disease at high altitude, all of which leave electrical footprints on the tracing. A normal ECG is reassuring but does not rule out every cardiac problem, so it is interpreted alongside symptoms, blood pressure, cardiac enzymes such as troponin, and at times an echocardiogram or treadmill test. Results are reviewed the same day, and any concerning pattern is flagged promptly for cardiology referral.

Preparation

No fasting needed. Wear loose clothing that allows easy access to the chest, wrists, and ankles. Avoid applying body lotion or oil to the chest on the day of the test, as it interferes with electrode contact. Tell us if you take heart medication so we can note it.
