About this test

An abdominal ultrasound uses harmless high-frequency sound waves, sent through a hand-held probe and a layer of gel, to build a live moving picture of the organs inside your belly — with no radiation and no injection. It lets the doctor look directly at the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, both kidneys, the urinary bladder, and the major blood vessels, and in women it can also show the uterus and ovaries. It is one of the first tests ordered for upper-abdominal pain, recurrent indigestion, jaundice or yellowing of the eyes, unexplained weight loss, a swollen abdomen, or an abnormal liver-function blood report. The scan is excellent at picking up gallstones — extremely common in Nepal and a frequent cause of colicky right-sided pain after fatty meals — as well as a fatty liver, kidney stones, a blocked or swollen kidney, cysts, abscesses, fluid collection (ascites), and many solid masses. In areas where tuberculosis and typhoid remain common, it also helps assess an enlarged liver or spleen and abdominal lymph nodes. Findings are always read together with your symptoms and blood tests, and the radiologist may suggest a focused follow-up scan, a CT, or an endoscopy if something needs closer study. The examination itself is painless, takes around fifteen to thirty minutes, and you can eat and return to normal activity immediately afterwards. A signed report from the radiologist is provided the same day, often within a couple of hours.

Preparation

Fasting for 6–8 hours is usually advised so the gallbladder is full and the bowel is free of gas. For an upper abdomen scan, avoid heavy meals the night before. If the kidneys, bladder, or pelvic organs are the focus, come with a comfortably full bladder — drink 3–4 glasses of water about an hour before and do not pass urine until the scan is done. Continue your regular medicines with a sip of water unless your doctor says otherwise.
