About this test

A digital X-ray uses a small, carefully controlled dose of radiation to produce an image of the structures inside your body, captured on an electronic detector rather than old-fashioned film. Dense tissues like bone absorb more radiation and appear white, while air-filled lungs appear dark, and soft tissues fall somewhere in between — this contrast is what lets the radiologist read the picture. Doctors order an X-ray for a very wide range of reasons: a suspected fracture or dislocation after a fall or road accident, joint pain or arthritis, a persistent cough or chest infection, shortness of breath, or to screen the chest before surgery. In Kathmandu a chest X-ray is one of the most commonly requested films, often as part of the work-up for suspected pulmonary tuberculosis, which remains common across Nepal — it can reveal cavities, patchy shadowing, or fluid around the lungs that point towards TB, pneumonia, or heart failure. Abdominal X-rays help assess bowel obstruction or swallowed objects, while dental and sinus views answer their own focused questions. Because it is fast, painless, and widely available, the X-ray is frequently the first imaging step, with the findings interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, and blood tests; if something needs closer study, your doctor may then arrange an ultrasound, CT, or MRI. The radiation dose from a single digital X-ray is low and well within safe limits, but we still shield you where appropriate and always ask women of reproductive age about possible pregnancy beforehand, as a precaution for the developing baby.
