About this test

Unlike an ordinary X-ray that freezes a single moment, a video X-ray — known medically as fluoroscopy — produces a continuous moving image on a screen, letting the radiologist watch your body in action in real time. A low-dose X-ray beam passes through the area of interest while you swallow, breathe, or move a joint, and the live picture reveals how things actually function rather than just how they look. It is the study of choice when motion is the question: a barium swallow shows how the throat and oesophagus carry food and can pick up swallowing difficulty, reflux, strictures, or a hiatus hernia; an upper-GI or barium meal outlines the stomach and duodenum for ulcers and obstruction; a barium enema maps the large bowel. Doctors also use fluoroscopy to watch the diaphragm move during breathing, to assess an unstable or painful joint as it bends, and to guide precise procedures such as joint injections, line placement, or reducing a dislocation. In Kathmandu it is frequently requested for adults and children with persistent swallowing trouble, unexplained vomiting, chronic constipation, or suspected bowel narrowing, where a contrast agent like barium or iodine sharpens the picture. Because the beam runs continuously, the radiographer keeps exposure as low as practicable and screens carefully for pregnancy. Findings are read alongside your symptoms, endoscopy where available, and any earlier still X-rays or CT scans, and a written report is usually ready the same day.

Preparation

Preparation depends on the body part being studied. For barium swallow or upper-GI studies, fast for 6 hours beforehand; for a barium enema, you will be given bowel-cleansing instructions the day before. For joint or chest fluoroscopy, no fasting is needed. Wear loose clothing and remove jewellery, belts, and metal objects. Tell us if you are or might be pregnant, as this study uses continuous X-rays.
