About this test

Estradiol is the most active form of oestrogen, the principal female sex hormone, produced chiefly by the developing follicles in the ovaries and, in smaller amounts, by the adrenal glands, fat tissue, and the testes in men. This test measures the level circulating in the blood and gives your doctor a window into ovarian function, the menstrual cycle, and overall hormonal balance. In women being investigated for irregular or absent periods, difficulty conceiving, or symptoms suggesting the menopause such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes, estradiol helps distinguish whether the ovaries are still working, slowing down, or have stopped. It is a cornerstone of fertility care: during ovulation-induction and IVF cycles in Kathmandu's assisted-reproduction units, estradiol is tracked alongside ultrasound to judge how follicles are responding to stimulation and to time egg collection safely. The result is almost never read alone — it is interpreted together with FSH, LH, progesterone, and prolactin, and against the day of the cycle on which blood was drawn, because normal values swing widely from the follicular phase to the mid-cycle surge. In girls it is used to assess early or delayed puberty, and in men an unexpectedly high level may be investigated alongside testosterone when there is breast enlargement, reduced libido, or infertility.
