About this test

Growth hormone is released in short pulses by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain, mostly during deep sleep and exercise, and it drives the growth of bones, muscle and tissue throughout life. Because it surges and falls hour to hour, a single random reading rarely gives a clear answer on its own, which is why doctors usually interpret it alongside IGF-1, a steadier marker the test sample reflects. In children, this test is requested when a boy or girl is growing far slower than peers, falling off their height chart, or has delayed puberty, raising the question of growth hormone deficiency. In adults, low levels may show up during investigation of pituitary damage after head injury, radiotherapy or a tumour, presenting as unexplained tiredness, poor muscle strength and low mood. The opposite problem, excess growth hormone from a benign pituitary tumour, is suspected when an adult notices enlarging hands, feet or facial features, a deepening voice, sweating and headaches, a condition called acromegaly; in children the same excess causes gigantism. Because of the natural pulses, a meaningful diagnosis often needs a dynamic test rather than a plain reading: a glucose suppression test to confirm acromegaly, or a stimulation test to confirm deficiency. The result is always read together with your symptoms, growth records, IGF-1, and frequently a pituitary MRI. Preparation

Overnight fasting of 8 hours is usually required, and the sample is best drawn early in the morning when you are rested. Tell us if you are taking steroids, oestrogen, or any medicine for diabetes. If your doctor has booked a stimulation or suppression test, follow the special timed instructions our staff will give you, as several samples are taken over a few hours.
