About this test

The Absolute Eosinophil Count reports the actual number of eosinophils โ€” a specialised type of white blood cell โ€” in each microlitre of your blood, rather than just their percentage. Eosinophils are the immune system's response team for two situations in particular: allergic reactions and parasitic infections. Because their numbers can shift sharply while the total white-cell count stays normal, doctors prefer the absolute figure, which is calculated by combining the total leucocyte count with the differential. The normal range typically sits below about 500 cells per microlitre. A raised count (eosinophilia) commonly points to allergic conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria and eczema, to drug reactions, and โ€” very relevantly in Nepal โ€” to intestinal worm and other parasitic infestations, which remain widespread and are a leading reason this test is ordered here alongside a stool examination. Persistently high counts may also prompt evaluation for skin disorders, certain autoimmune diseases, and, rarely, blood disorders such as hypereosinophilic syndrome or leukaemia. A doctor may request an AEC when you have unexplained itching, recurrent wheezing, chronic skin rashes, lingering cough, abdominal symptoms, or to monitor how well allergy or asthma treatment is working. A low or absent count, often seen during acute infection or with steroid use, is usually of little concern. The result is best interpreted within the wider complete blood count and your clinical history, so your physician will read it together with your symptoms, exposure to allergens, and where indicated, stool and other findings before deciding on next steps.

Sample type

Whole blood (EDTA)

Preparation

No fasting required. Drink water normally. If you take steroid medicines (tablets, inhalers or skin creams) or antihistamines, please mention them, as these can lower the count.
