About this test
This test identifies which of the four main blood groups you belong to — A, B, AB or O — and whether you are Rhesus (Rh) positive or negative, giving a result such as O positive or AB negative. It works in two complementary ways: forward grouping uses known antibodies to detect the A and B antigens sitting on the surface of your red cells, while reverse grouping checks your serum for the naturally occurring anti-A and anti-B antibodies, and the two must agree before a result is confirmed. The Rh(D) typing then looks for the D antigen. Knowing your group matters most when blood must be transfused, because giving incompatible blood triggers a dangerous immune reaction; it is therefore mandatory before surgery, during major trauma, in pregnancy, and ahead of any planned transfusion for conditions like severe anaemia or thalassaemia. The result is especially important for expectant mothers in Nepal: an Rh-negative woman carrying an Rh-positive baby can form antibodies that harm a future pregnancy, which is why early grouping allows timely anti-D prophylaxis. People also commonly request the test for blood-donor registration, marriage and visa documentation, employment and driving-licence files, or simply to keep on record for emergencies. It is frequently ordered alongside a complete blood count and, where transfusion is planned, with cross-matching and an antibody screen. A blood group does not change over your lifetime, so a single reliable result serves you permanently.
