About this test

This pair of simple bedside tests gives a quick, first-line look at how well your blood plugs and seals a small wound. Bleeding Time measures the minutes it takes for a tiny, standardised skin prick to stop oozing — this reflects how your platelets and small blood vessels work together to form the initial plug, and is normally around 2 to 7 minutes. Clotting Time measures how long a drop of blood takes to set into a firm clot in a capillary tube, normally about 4 to 9 minutes, reflecting the coagulation cascade that strengthens that plug. Doctors in Kathmandu most commonly order BT-CT as a low-cost screen before minor surgery, tooth extractions, or childbirth, and when a patient reports easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, gums that bleed when brushing, or unusually heavy periods. It is also requested when fever and rash raise suspicion of dengue during the monsoon, since falling platelets can prolong the bleeding time. These are screening tests, not precise diagnostic ones — a prolonged result simply tells your doctor to look further. If the numbers are abnormal or the clinical suspicion is high, more sensitive studies such as platelet count, Prothrombin Time (PT/INR), and APTT are used to pinpoint whether the problem lies with platelets, clotting factors like in haemophilia, liver disease, or medicines you are taking. Preparation

No fasting needed. Please tell us about any blood-thinning medicines you take — aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, or regular painkillers such as ibuprofen — as these can lengthen the result. Avoid these for a few days only if your doctor has advised it.
