About this test

This test measures the amount of glucose in your blood exactly two hours after your evening meal, capturing how well your body clears sugar during the part of the day when many Nepali households eat their heaviest plate of rice. In a person without diabetes, insulin pushes the post-meal glucose back down so that the two-hour value stays below about 140 mg/dL; in someone with prediabetes or diabetes, the value climbs higher and falls more slowly, revealing a problem that a fasting sugar alone can miss. Doctors order it most often to monitor people already diagnosed with type 2 diabetes — it shows whether the current diet, tablets or insulin dose is controlling the after-dinner spike — and to investigate symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent night-time urination, unexplained tiredness, blurred vision or slow-healing wounds. It is also used in pregnancy to watch for gestational diabetes and in anyone with a strong family history of diabetes, which is extremely common across Nepal. The dinner-specific timing matters because evening meals here tend to be large and rice-rich, and the late-night rise can stay undetected if only the post-breakfast sample is checked. The result is rarely read in isolation: your doctor will interpret it alongside your fasting blood sugar and your HbA1c, which reflects average control over the past two to three months, to build a complete picture. A single high reading does not by itself confirm diabetes — repeat testing and clinical correlation guide the final decision.

Preparation

Eat your normal dinner, then come to the lab exactly 2 hours after your first bite. Do not eat, snack, or drink tea, coffee or juice during those 2 hours — plain water is fine. Take your usual diabetes medicines or insulin unless your doctor has told you otherwise. Note the time you started eating so we can record it accurately.
