About this test

This rapid card test screens a drop of serum for IgM and IgG antibodies the body produces against Brucella, the bacterium responsible for brucellosis. Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection — it passes to humans from infected cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep, and pigs, most often through drinking raw or unpasteurised milk and curd, handling birthing fluids or carcasses, or close contact with herds. That makes it a real but under-recognised illness for farmers, herders, dairy workers, veterinarians, and abattoir staff across rural Nepal and the Kathmandu valley's peri-urban dairies. The illness is notoriously hard to pin down clinically: it produces a fluctuating or undulating fever, drenching night sweats, profound fatigue, body and joint aches, loss of appetite, and weight loss that can drag on for weeks, so doctors frequently order it when a prolonged fever of unknown origin has not turned out to be typhoid, tuberculosis, or malaria. A reactive IgM band suggests recent or active infection, while IgG points to longer-standing or past exposure; because antibodies take time to appear and can persist, the rapid result is best read together with your symptoms, occupational history, and a confirmatory test such as the Brucella agglutination titre (Rose Bengal or standard tube agglutination) or blood culture. A negative result early in illness does not fully exclude brucellosis, and repeat or confirmatory testing may be advised. Diagnosis matters because brucellosis responds well to a prolonged, specific antibiotic course but can relapse or settle into bones, joints, or the heart if missed.
