About this test

This test measures the amount of glucose in your blood exactly two hours after you start a meal, capturing how well your body clears the sugar load that food puts into your circulation. In a healthy person, insulin pushes blood glucose back down towards normal within two hours; in someone developing diabetes, that recovery is sluggish and the reading stays high. Doctors order it most often alongside a fasting blood sugar, because the two values together describe the full daily glucose picture โ€” fasting tells you the baseline, while the post-prandial number reveals the after-meal spikes that fasting tests alone can miss. A 2-hour value of 140 mg/dL or below is considered normal, 140โ€“199 mg/dL suggests impaired glucose tolerance, and 200 mg/dL or above on repeated testing supports a diagnosis of diabetes. It is commonly requested when someone reports excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, persistent tiredness, blurred vision, or slow-healing wounds, and it is a routine part of monitoring for people already on diabetes treatment to check whether their meals and medicines are well balanced. In Nepal, where rice-heavy meals deliver a large carbohydrate load and type 2 diabetes is rising sharply in both urban Kathmandu and rural communities, the post-prandial reading is a particularly practical window into how everyday eating affects your sugar control. Results are usually interpreted together with fasting glucose and HbA1c for a confident assessment, and a single high value is normally confirmed before any diagnosis is made.

Sample type

Blood (serum/plasma, fluoride)

Preparation

Eat your normal meal, then come to the lab exactly 2 hours after the first bite. Do not eat, snack, or drink sugary tea or juice during the 2-hour wait โ€” plain water is fine. If you take diabetes medicines or insulin, take them as usual unless your doctor tells you otherwise. This test is usually done together with a fasting sample, so you may be asked to give blood before breakfast as well.
