About this test

Serum creatinine is a single waste-product number that doctors use to estimate kidney filtering capacity. Creatinine comes from normal muscle metabolism and is removed from the blood almost entirely by the kidneys, so a rising value is one of the earliest signs that the kidneys are slowing down. Combined with your age, sex, and body weight, the result is used to calculate eGFR — the practical measure of kidney function. Doctors order it on its own to monitor known kidney disease, to adjust the dose of medication that is cleared through the kidneys (many antibiotics and pain medicines), before contrast-dye procedures like CT scans, and during any acute illness involving dehydration, urinary infection, or unexplained swelling. It is also part of all our standard health-screening packages.

Preparation

No fasting strictly required, although the test is often ordered alongside others that do need it. Avoid heavy meat consumption in the 24 hours before the sample as it can raise creatinine slightly.
