CRP Qualitative Test in Kathmandu

About this test
C-reactive protein is a substance the liver pours into the bloodstream within hours of any inflammation, tissue injury, or infection, and this qualitative version simply answers the first practical question a doctor has: is the level raised above normal, yes or no? Using a latex agglutination method, the test reports a positive or negative result (and often a rough titre) rather than an exact number, which makes it a fast, inexpensive bedside screen rather than a precise measurement. Your doctor will typically order it when you have an unexplained fever, when a bacterial infection such as pneumonia, a urinary infection, or appendicitis is suspected, or to gauge how active a known inflammatory condition like rheumatoid arthritis is. A positive result tells your doctor that genuine inflammation is present and tends to point towards a bacterial rather than a viral cause, since bacterial infections usually drive CRP much higher; it also rises in the days after surgery or injury. A negative result is reassuring against significant acute inflammation but does not rule out every mild or very early illness. Because CRP is non-specific โ it shows that something is inflamed but not where or why โ it is always interpreted alongside your symptoms, your white-cell count on a CBC, and the clinical picture. In Kathmandu it is a workhorse during monsoon fever clinics, helping separate likely bacterial illness from common viral fevers and guiding whether antibiotics are warranted. Where a doctor needs to monitor treatment response closely, a quantitative CRP is preferred, but the qualitative test remains an excellent quick first step.
