About this test
Fasting Blood Sugar measures glucose in the blood after an 8–12 hour overnight fast. It is the simplest, fastest screening test for diabetes and pre-diabetes — the result is available within an hour of the sample being drawn. Diagnostic cut-offs are well established: under 100 mg/dL is normal, 100–125 mg/dL is pre-diabetes (impaired fasting glucose), and 126 mg/dL or above on two separate days confirms diabetes. The test is recommended annually from age 35 (or earlier if you have a family history, obesity, hypertension, gestational diabetes in the past, or PCOS). It is also used to track day-to-day control in known diabetics alongside HbA1c, which gives the longer 2–3 month average. Pairing FBS with a postprandial reading two hours after a meal is the standard outpatient way to characterise glucose behaviour.
