About this test

This panel measures allergen-specific IgE antibodies in your blood against forty individual foods at once, covering the items most often blamed for true food allergy: cow's milk, egg white and yolk, wheat, soya, peanut, tree nuts, sesame, fish and shellfish, and a range of fruits, vegetables and spices commonly eaten across Nepali households. When your immune system is genuinely allergic to a food, it makes IgE directed at that specific protein, and a raised level points to sensitisation. Doctors order this test when someone develops hives, lip or facial swelling, itching, vomiting, wheezing or, at its most dangerous, anaphylaxis within minutes to a couple of hours of eating — and when the offending food is not obvious from the history alone. It is especially useful in children with eczema or recurrent allergic symptoms, and in adults who suspect a food but cannot safely retest it at home. An important caveat we always explain: a positive result means sensitisation, not certain allergy, because many people carry IgE to foods they tolerate perfectly well. The numbers must therefore be read alongside your symptom history, and sometimes a supervised oral challenge, before any food is permanently removed from the diet — needlessly cutting out staples like milk, egg or wheat can harm nutrition, particularly in growing children. This panel does not detect non-IgE problems such as lactose intolerance, coeliac disease or food poisoning, which present differently and need separate testing. Preparation

No fasting required, and you do not need to stop eating the foods being tested beforehand. Antihistamines and most other medicines do not affect this blood test, but tell us if you carry an adrenaline auto-injector or have had a severe reaction.
