About this test

The Glucose Challenge Test is a simple screening step used mainly during pregnancy to find women who may be developing gestational diabetes. Unlike a fasting test, it can be done at any time of day: you swallow a measured 50 gram glucose drink and we check a single blood sugar reading exactly one hour later, which shows how well your body clears a sugar load while pregnant. It is most commonly offered between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy, and earlier in women carrying extra risk — a family history of diabetes, a previous large baby, a high body weight, polycystic ovaries, or a previous pregnancy affected by raised sugars. In Nepal, where diabetes in pregnancy is becoming increasingly common and is often missed because it causes no symptoms, this test is a valuable safeguard for both mother and baby. The GCT is purely a screen, not a final diagnosis. A reading at or above the usual threshold of 140 mg/dL does not confirm diabetes; it simply tells your doctor that the longer, fasting Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) is needed to settle the question. A normal result is reassuring and usually requires no further sugar testing for the rest of that pregnancy. Occasionally the same test is used outside pregnancy as a quick check when diabetes is suspected. Because the result is interpreted alongside your stage of pregnancy, weight, blood pressure, and any urine sugar findings, please tell us how many weeks pregnant you are when you come in.

Preparation

No fasting required — you may eat normally beforehand. On arrival you will drink a measured 50 gram glucose solution, and a single blood sample is taken exactly one hour later. Please stay in the lab and rest quietly during that hour; avoid walking around, smoking, or eating, as activity can alter the result.
