About this test
HbA1c is the single best blood test for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes because it averages out blood sugar levels over the previous 2–3 months — it cannot be skewed by what you ate this morning. The test measures the percentage of haemoglobin in red blood cells that has glucose stuck to it; the more sugar has been circulating in your blood, the higher the percentage. Diagnostic guidelines treat ≥6.5% as diabetes, 5.7%–6.4% as pre-diabetes, and below 5.7% as normal. People already living with diabetes typically aim for HbA1c under 7%, and most endocrinologists order this test every 3–6 months to gauge whether medication, diet, and lifestyle changes are working. Useful at first diagnosis, as an annual screen for anyone with a strong family history of diabetes, and as a routine follow-up for known diabetics.
