About this test
HBsAg is the screening test for Hepatitis B infection. A positive result means the virus is currently in your blood — it does not by itself tell whether the infection is recent, chronic, or quietly active. Hepatitis B can spread through unsafe injections, contaminated tattoos, sharing razors or toothbrushes, unprotected sex, and from mother to baby at birth; many carriers feel completely well for years while the virus damages their liver. The rapid HBsAg test is recommended once for every adult, before any surgery, at the first antenatal visit for every pregnant woman, before donating blood, and immediately after any high-risk exposure such as a needle-stick injury. A positive screen is always followed by quantitative HBsAg, HBeAg, anti-HBe, HBV DNA viral load, and Liver Function Tests to plan treatment.
