About this test
The HCV Rapid test detects antibodies that the body produces in response to Hepatitis C infection. Hepatitis C is most often transmitted through contaminated injections, unsafe medical or dental procedures, blood transfusions before universal screening, shared razors, and unsterile tattoo or piercing equipment. The virus can quietly damage the liver for decades before causing symptoms, and modern antiviral treatment now cures the disease in 8–12 weeks — so finding it early matters a great deal. Routine screening is recommended at least once in adulthood, before surgery, during workup of unexplained liver-test abnormalities, in dialysis patients, before pregnancy, and after any high-risk exposure. A positive antibody screen is always confirmed with an HCV RNA viral-load test before treatment is started, since antibodies persist even after the infection has cleared on its own.
