About this test

Immunoglobulin E is the antibody class your immune system makes when it overreacts to an otherwise harmless substance, and this test measures the total amount circulating in your blood. A raised total IgE is the body's fingerprint of an allergic tendency, so doctors order it when there is recurrent sneezing and a blocked or runny nose, itchy watery eyes, wheezing or asthma, persistent skin rashes such as eczema and urticaria (hives), or reactions to certain foods and medicines. It is also one of the most useful markers for parasitic worm infection — a particularly relevant point in Nepal, where intestinal helminths remain common, especially in young children and in rural and peri-urban communities around the Kathmandu valley. Because both allergy and worms push the number up, a high total IgE is interpreted alongside your symptoms, an eosinophil count from a complete blood count, and where needed specific (allergen-targeted) IgE or skin-prick testing to pin down the exact trigger. In children with frequent chest infections and eczema it helps build the picture of an "allergic march," while in adults with chronic hives or unexplained breathlessness it guides whether an allergic cause is likely. A normal result makes an IgE-mediated allergy less probable but does not fully exclude it, and a high result on its own does not name the culprit — it simply tells your doctor the allergic-parasitic pathway is active and worth pursuing. This is a same-day blood test that needs no special preparation.
