About this test

If sneezing fits, a perpetually blocked or runny nose, itchy watery eyes, or recurring wheeze and breathlessness keep returning without an obvious cause, this panel helps pin down exactly which airborne triggers your immune system is reacting to. It measures specific IgE antibodies in the blood against 40 inhaled (aeroallergen) substances at once — the things you breathe rather than eat. The list typically spans house dust mites, cockroach, cat and dog dander, several moulds (such as Aspergillus and Alternaria), tree, grass and weed pollens, and other environmental particles. A raised specific IgE against any one item means your body has become sensitised to it, and combined with your symptom history it points your doctor toward the likely cause of your allergic rhinitis or allergic asthma. In the Kathmandu valley this is especially useful: a dusty, often poorly ventilated indoor environment favours dust mites and moulds, while winter inversion, brick-kiln and traffic smog, and seasonal pollen surges in spring commonly inflame already-sensitive airways. The blood-based approach is convenient because it can be done at any time, is unaffected by allergy medicines, and is safe for people with severe eczema, dermographism, or a history of strong allergic reactions where skin testing is awkward. Results are read together with your clinical picture, a complete blood count (eosinophils), and sometimes total IgE — a positive result confirms sensitisation but does not by itself prove that a substance is causing your symptoms, so your doctor interprets the pattern rather than chasing every raised value. Identifying the real culprits guides targeted avoidance, medication, and, where appropriate, referral for immunotherapy.
