About this test

The Iron Profile measures three values together to give the full picture of how the body stores and transports iron: serum iron (what's circulating right now), Total Iron Binding Capacity or TIBC (how much iron the blood could carry), and ferritin (the long-term storage form, which falls earliest in deficiency). Iron-deficiency anaemia is one of the most common reasons for fatigue, breathlessness on stairs, hair fall, and brittle nails in Nepali women of reproductive age. The Iron Profile is the right test when a CBC shows microcytic (small-cell) anaemia, when oral iron has not worked, or when a doctor wants to distinguish true iron deficiency from anaemia of chronic disease. It is also useful during pregnancy and after gastrointestinal blood loss.

Preparation

Overnight fasting (8–12 hours) preferred for accuracy. Do not take iron supplements for at least 24 hours before the sample — recent supplementation falsely raises results.
