About this test

A Liver Function Test measures the enzymes and proteins that tell a doctor whether the liver is working normally and whether liver cells are being damaged. The standard panel includes SGPT (ALT), SGOT (AST), alkaline phosphatase, GGT, total and direct bilirubin, total protein, albumin, and the A:G ratio. Together they can flag fatty liver, alcoholic or non-alcoholic hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, bile-flow obstruction (jaundice), and chronic infections like Hepatitis B and C — often before any symptoms appear. The LFT is ordered routinely for people on long-term medication (tuberculosis treatment, statins, anti-epileptics), for everyone with abnormal results on screening, and during any episode of jaundice, severe fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or right-upper abdominal pain. It is also a standard pre-operative test.

Preparation

Overnight fasting (8–12 hours) is recommended for the most accurate results. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the sample.
