About this test
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and a quiet partner in hundreds of essential reactions — it keeps the heart's rhythm steady, helps nerves and muscles fire correctly, supports healthy bones, and is needed for the body to use vitamin D and to keep potassium and calcium in balance. This test measures the magnesium dissolved in your serum, which a doctor uses to investigate symptoms such as muscle cramps and twitching, tremor, persistent fatigue, an irregular or racing heartbeat, numbness and tingling, or unexplained low calcium or low potassium that refuses to correct. Low magnesium is the more common problem and is frequently seen alongside heavy or prolonged use of certain medicines, including diuretics ("water pills") and the acid-reducing PPIs (such as omeprazole or pantoprazole) that many people in Kathmandu take long-term for gastritis. It is also low in poorly controlled diabetes, in chronic alcohol use, and after bouts of severe diarrhoea or vomiting, which matters here during episodes of gastrointestinal illness. High magnesium is rarer and usually points to reduced kidney function or excessive intake of magnesium-based antacids and laxatives. Because the result rarely tells the whole story on its own, your doctor will usually read it together with calcium, potassium, sodium, and kidney function, and sometimes an ECG if the heart rhythm is a concern. The test is quick, needs only an ordinary blood draw, and helps explain stubborn electrolyte problems that other tests cannot.
