Preparation

Come fasting for 8–10 hours overnight; only plain water is allowed. You will be given a measured glucose drink (usually 75 g, or 50 g for the screening version in pregnancy), and a blood sample is drawn exactly 1 hour afterwards. Stay seated and rest in the lab during the wait — do not eat, smoke, chew tobacco, or walk around, as activity changes the result. Tell us if you feel faint or vomit, as the test may need to be repeated.
