About this test
The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test is the most precise outpatient test for diagnosing pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. A fasting blood sample is drawn first; you then drink a standardised glucose solution (75 g for adults), after which the lab draws a second sample exactly 2 hours later. The 2-hour value tells the doctor how well your body handled a large sugar load. Diagnostic cut-offs are: under 140 mg/dL normal, 140–199 mg/dL impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes), and 200 mg/dL or higher diabetes. It is the recommended screening test for all pregnant women between 24 and 28 weeks, for patients with borderline fasting glucose, for women with PCOS, and when there is a strong clinical suspicion of diabetes despite a normal fasting sugar.

Preparation
8–12 hours of overnight fasting. Plan for around 2.5 hours at the clinic. Eat your normal carbohydrate-rich diet for 3 days before the test. Do not smoke, exercise vigorously, or skip the fast.
