About this test
Random Blood Sugar measures glucose in the blood at any time of day, without requiring you to fast first. It is the standard quick check when a patient presents with classic symptoms of high blood sugar — excessive thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, sudden weight loss, or unexplained fatigue — because it confirms the suspicion immediately. A random reading of 200 mg/dL or above, alongside those symptoms, is considered diagnostic of diabetes. Doctors also order RBS at emergency presentation, during episodes of dizziness or fainting (to rule out hypoglycaemia), in pre-operative assessments, and as part of basic health camps where overnight fasting isn't practical. It is less suited to diagnosing pre-diabetes than the fasting or HbA1c tests, so a normal RBS does not rule out early glucose intolerance — your doctor may follow up with FBS, HbA1c, or OGTT.
