About this test

The Renal Function Test bundles the blood markers doctors use to judge how well your kidneys are filtering waste. It typically includes urea, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid, and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. From these the lab can also calculate eGFR, the single most useful estimate of kidney function. Early kidney disease is silent — by the time symptoms appear, function is already significantly reduced — which is why the RFT is recommended at least once a year for anyone with diabetes, hypertension, a family history of kidney disease, or long-term use of painkillers. In acute settings, doctors order it when dehydration, urinary infection, swelling of the legs or face, or unexplained nausea raises concern. Preparation

Overnight fasting (8–12 hours) preferred for accuracy but not strictly required for the RFT alone. If your doctor has ordered other tests alongside, fasting is generally needed.
