About this test

TORCH is an acronym for a group of infections that can cross the placenta and harm a developing baby: Toxoplasma, Other agents (often syphilis, and sometimes varicella or parvovirus), Rubella, Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Herpes simplex virus. This profile measures two classes of antibody against each organism โ€” IgM, which suggests a recent or active infection, and IgG, which usually reflects past exposure and existing immunity. It is most often requested before or early in pregnancy, and especially after a miscarriage, stillbirth, repeated pregnancy loss, or an ultrasound showing growth restriction, calcifications, or other abnormalities. A doctor reads the results as a pattern rather than a single number: IgG positive with IgM negative is generally reassuring and points to long-standing immunity, whereas a positive IgM may prompt repeat testing, IgG avidity studies, or confirmatory tests before any decision is made, as IgM can occasionally be falsely raised. In Nepal, rubella and toxoplasma exposure are common, and many women already carry protective IgG โ€” which is why interpretation matters more than a bare positive or negative tick. Because catching these infections during pregnancy is far more consequential than at other times, the panel helps your obstetrician decide whether you are already protected, need closer monitoring, or would benefit from vaccination before conceiving (as with rubella, which cannot be given during pregnancy). It is best understood as a planning and screening tool, interpreted alongside your symptoms, gestational age, and antenatal scans, rather than a standalone diagnosis.
