About this test

Urea is the waste product your liver makes when it breaks down the protein in your food and in your own tissues, and your kidneys clear it from the blood into the urine. Measuring it in serum gives a quick, inexpensive window onto how well the kidneys are filtering and how well-hydrated you are. Doctors rarely read urea in isolation; it is interpreted alongside serum creatinine and the estimated GFR, because the two together help separate a true kidney problem from other causes.
