About this test

Uric acid is the waste product the body forms when it breaks down purines (found in many foods and produced naturally during cell turnover). When the level in the blood is persistently high, sharp uric-acid crystals form inside joints and cause the sudden, severely painful attacks known as gout — most commonly in the big toe. Long-term high uric acid also raises the risk of kidney stones and is increasingly linked to metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. The test is ordered when a patient has acute joint pain or swelling, recurrent kidney stones, a family history of gout, or as a one-off screen in adults with hypertension or obesity. Doctors interpret the reading alongside the joint examination, kidney function, and a 24-hour urine uric acid if the cause is unclear; results above 7.0 mg/dL in men and 6.0 mg/dL in women generally warrant intervention.

Preparation

Overnight fasting (8–12 hours) is preferred. Avoid alcohol and high-purine foods (organ meat, shellfish, red meat, lentils) for 24 hours before the sample for the most accurate reading.
