About this test

Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy red blood cells, nerve function, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency is widespread in Nepal, especially among lifelong vegetarians and the elderly — symptoms include persistent fatigue, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, brain fog, mood changes, glossitis (a smooth red tongue), and a particular type of anaemia that does not improve with iron supplements alone. The test measures the amount of B12 circulating in your blood; values below 200 pg/mL are considered deficient and often require injections rather than oral supplements. Doctors order it during workups for unexplained anaemia, nerve symptoms, memory complaints in the elderly, and for patients on long-term acid-suppressing medication (PPIs) or metformin, both of which interfere with B12 absorption. Often paired with serum folate and CBC.
