About this test

A medium specimen biopsy is the microscopic examination of a moderate-sized piece of tissue removed from the body so that a pathologist can determine exactly what the cells are doing. This category typically covers samples such as a removed skin lesion, a lymph node, a section of gut taken at endoscopy, a chunk of breast lump, a piece of thyroid or salivary gland, or a portion of an organ taken at surgery โ€” larger than a tiny needle core but not a whole resected organ. Once the tissue reaches us in formalin, it is processed overnight, embedded in wax, sliced into sections thinner than a hair, stained, and studied under the microscope. The pathologist looks at the architecture and individual cells to tell whether a growth is benign or malignant, to grade a cancer, to identify infection, and to check whether disease reaches the cut edges. In Nepal this remains the definitive way to confirm tuberculosis in a lymph node or other tissue, which can mimic cancer clinically and is common across all age groups. A biopsy is usually requested after a lump, ulcer, persistent swelling, or abnormal growth is found on examination or scanning, and it is interpreted alongside your clinical findings, imaging, and sometimes special or immunohistochemical stains. Because the report often determines whether and how you are treated, the tissue is handled carefully and a slightly longer turnaround reflects the meticulous processing involved rather than any problem. Your treating doctor will explain the findings and the next steps with you.

Preparation

No fasting needed. The tissue is removed by your doctor or surgeon during a minor procedure and sent to us already fixed in formalin. Please ensure the request form states the exact site the sample was taken from and any relevant history, as this guides the pathologist's interpretation.
