About this test
Ferritin is the protein that stores iron inside cells, and serum ferritin is the most sensitive single test for diagnosing iron deficiency — it drops before the haemoglobin in a CBC ever falls. A low ferritin almost certainly means the body's iron stores are depleted, even if the patient is not yet anaemic. The test is the right choice when investigating fatigue, hair fall, restless legs, or unexplained breathlessness in a patient whose CBC is borderline; it is also used during pregnancy to confirm iron status. Ferritin is an acute-phase reactant, which means it can also rise during infection, inflammation, or liver disease — so very high values are interpreted alongside CRP, ESR, and liver tests. Often ordered with serum iron and TIBC to form the complete Iron Profile.

Preparation
No fasting strictly required, though many doctors order ferritin alongside other panels that do need fasting. Avoid iron supplements for 24 hours before the test.
