About this test

Platelets are the smallest cells in your blood, and their job is to plug damaged vessel walls and start the clotting process whenever you cut or bruise yourself. This test simply counts how many platelets are circulating in a measured volume of blood, with the healthy range usually sitting between 150,000 and 450,000 per microlitre. A doctor most often orders it as part of a wider blood count, but it is requested on its own when there is a specific worry about bleeding or clotting. The symptoms that prompt it include easy or unexplained bruising, tiny pinpoint red spots on the skin, bleeding gums, frequent nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods, or blood that takes a long time to stop. A low count (thrombocytopenia) raises the risk of bleeding and may follow viral infections, certain medicines, liver disease, or bone-marrow problems; a high count (thrombocytosis) can reflect inflammation, iron deficiency, or, less commonly, a marrow disorder. In Kathmandu the count carries particular weight during the monsoon months, when dengue is widespread and a falling platelet level is one of the key warning signs that a febrile patient needs closer monitoring or hospital care. Because clumped platelets in the sample tube can give a falsely low reading, an unexpectedly low result is normally confirmed by examining a blood film under the microscope. The number is always interpreted alongside your symptoms, your haemoglobin and white-cell counts, and the clinical picture rather than in isolation.

Sample type

Whole blood (EDTA)

Preparation

No fasting required. Drink water normally. If you have recently had a viral fever, please mention the day it started, as platelet levels often dip and recover with such illnesses.
