RBC Count Test in Kathmandu

About this test
The RBC count reports how many red blood cells (erythrocytes) are present in a measured volume of your blood โ the very cells that carry oxygen from your lungs to every tissue using the iron-rich pigment haemoglobin. It is one component of a Complete Blood Count and is read together with haemoglobin, haematocrit, and the red-cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC), because the number alone tells only part of the story. A low count points towards anaemia, which in Nepal most often stems from iron deficiency โ common in menstruating women, growing children, and those following largely vegetarian diets low in absorbable iron โ though it may also reflect vitamin B12 or folate shortage, chronic infection, kidney disease, or blood loss. A high count (polycythaemia) can simply follow dehydration, but may also arise from long-term smoking, chronic lung disease, sleep-related breathing problems, life at higher altitude, or, less often, a primary bone-marrow disorder. Doctors order it when patients describe tiredness, breathlessness on mild exertion, dizziness, pallor, palpitations, or headaches, and as part of routine screening before surgery, during pregnancy, and in the follow-up of chronic illness. The same sample also lets the laboratory calculate the indices that distinguish small pale cells (typical of iron deficiency) from larger cells (suggesting B12 or folate problems), so the result helps direct the next, more specific tests rather than giving a final diagnosis on its own.
Sample type
Whole blood (EDTA)
Preparation
No fasting required. Stay normally hydrated โ drink water as usual, since dehydration can falsely raise the count.
