This test measures the total amount of creatinine your kidneys clear into the urine across a full 24-hour period. Creatinine is a steady waste product of muscle metabolism that healthy kidneys filter out at a fairly constant daily rate, which makes it an unusually reliable yardstick. On its own the figure tells your doctor how completely the collection was done, but its real value emerges when it is paired with a simultaneous blood creatinine to calculate creatinine clearance, an estimate of how well the filtering units of the kidney are working. Preparation

Collect every drop of urine over a full 24 hours into the container we provide. On the morning you start, empty your bladder into the toilet (do not save this) and note the time; from then on, collect all urine, including the first sample of the next morning at the same time. Keep the container cool, ideally refrigerated, during collection. No fasting is needed, but avoid heavy meat meals and intense exercise the day before, as both can alter the result.
