Uric acid is the end product of purine breakdown, and how much of it leaves the body each day tells your doctor whether a raised blood level is caused by overproduction or by the kidneys failing to excrete it properly — a distinction that directly changes treatment. Doctors most often order this study to investigate recurrent kidney stones, since uric-acid and mixed stones are common in people who eat a lot of red meat, organ meat, seafood, or who drink heavily, and the result guides decisions on fluid intake, urine alkalinisation, and whether allopurinol is needed. Collect every drop of urine over a full 24-hour period into the container we provide, which may hold a preservative — keep it cool and away from sunlight. Discard the very first morning sample, then collect everything until the same time the next morning. No fasting is needed, but tell us about any medicines you take, especially diuretics, aspirin, or urate-lowering drugs such as allopurinol.
