About this test

This panel screens a single urine sample for several common drugs of abuse and their breakdown products, typically opiates (morphine, often reflecting heroin or codeine use), cocaine, benzodiazepines (sedatives such as diazepam and nitrazepam), amphetamines, cannabis (THC), and sometimes barbiturates or methadone, depending on the configuration ordered. It works by detecting drug residues that the kidneys clear into the urine over hours to days after use, so it reflects recent rather than current intoxication. Doctors request it in a wide range of settings: assessing a patient brought to emergency with unexplained drowsiness, agitation, or altered consciousness; investigating suspected overdose or poisoning; monitoring someone in a de-addiction or rehabilitation programme; and for routine pre-employment, fitness, or workplace screening, which is increasingly common in Nepal for drivers, security staff, and those heading abroad for foreign employment. A positive result is a screening flag, not a final verdict — it indicates the presence of a drug class above a cut-off level, but legitimate prescriptions, certain cold-and-pain medicines, and even strong analgesics can trigger an opiate or benzodiazepine reading, which is why your medication history matters. When a result carries legal or employment consequences, it should be confirmed by a more specific laboratory method before any conclusion is drawn. The findings are always interpreted alongside the clinical picture, the reason for testing, and what you have been prescribed, and a negative result does not completely rule out a substance taken outside the test's detection window.
