About this test

This test photographs and counts the 46 chromosomes carried in each partner's cells, arranging them into the standard 23 paired set to look for hidden structural or numerical faults that a healthy adult can carry without ever knowing. White blood cells from each sample are grown in the laboratory, halted at the stage of division when chromosomes are most visible, stained and examined under the microscope — which is why a fortnight is needed before results are ready. For couples it is usually requested after two or more miscarriages, a stillbirth, a baby born with a chromosomal condition, repeated failed IVF cycles, or unexplained infertility, and the two reports are always read side by side. The commonest finding is a balanced translocation, where a piece of one chromosome has swapped places with another: the carrier parent is entirely healthy, but the rearrangement can become unbalanced when passed to an embryo, leading to recurrent pregnancy loss. The test also detects inversions, mosaicism, an extra or missing sex chromosome, and conditions such as Klinefelter or Turner syndrome that can underlie low sperm counts or absent periods. In Nepal, where consanguineous marriage is common in some communities and where couples often reach a specialist only after several losses, a clear chromosomal answer can end years of uncertainty. A normal result is reassuring; an abnormal one guides the couple toward genetic counselling, prenatal testing, or assisted-reproduction options with embryo screening.
