Urine Pregnancy Test (UPT) Test in Kathmandu

About this test
The urine pregnancy test looks for human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), a hormone produced by the developing placenta soon after a fertilised egg implants in the womb. A few drops of urine on the test strip will turn positive once hCG rises above roughly 25 mIU/mL, which usually happens around the time of a missed period or a few days after. It is the simplest and quickest way to confirm an early pregnancy, which is why it is the first step whenever a woman of reproductive age has a delayed period, breast tenderness, nausea, or unexplained tiredness. Doctors also order it as a routine safety check before prescribing certain medicines, before X-rays or surgery, and before starting hormonal treatment, because many drugs and procedures are unsafe in early pregnancy. A clear positive is reliable, but timing matters: testing too early, or on heavily diluted urine after drinking a lot of fluids, can produce a false negative when you are in fact pregnant. A positive result tells you that hCG is present but not whether the pregnancy is healthy or correctly located in the womb; if there is lower abdominal pain or bleeding, an ectopic or threatened pregnancy must be ruled out with an ultrasound scan. Where the result needs confirming or dating, a blood beta-hCG and a pelvic ultrasound are the usual next steps. In Nepal, the urine test remains the everyday starting point in clinics and pharmacies before a woman is referred for antenatal care.
Sample type
Urine (first-morning, mid-stream)
Preparation
No fasting needed. A first-morning urine sample is best because the pregnancy hormone is most concentrated then. Avoid drinking large amounts of water beforehand, as dilute urine can give a falsely negative result early on. If your period is only a day or two late, a repeat test after 3โ4 days is more reliable.
